Writing Portfolio
I’m
Paul Thomas Moore
Accredited communicator, MBA, writer in many formats

Brief Bio
The first part of my career was in a small ad agency, followed by stints in retail radio and an audio-visual production house. Later, I branched out with my own advertising and marketing consultancy service, as well as print and broadcast journalism.
Ad concept and headline I wrote for Atlantic Canada's coastal ferry service.
I decided to hit the books for more formal communications and business training (Bachelor of Public Relations; MBA, Accredited Business Communicator), and following graduation worked in business and government.
Letter of Accreditation, IABC
I have experience in media pitching, branding, and as a director and manager of marketing and communications efforts, but my core "skill" is an understanding that successful messaging is audience-focused (and if at all possible data-driven), and must be implemented with creativity, consistency, and clarity. The attached resume traces a wide career path involving advertising (e.g., print, broadcast, billboard, mass email); and internal and external public relations (e.g., news releases, media advisories, speeches, slide-video scripting, business letters). Last but not least, I know getting somewhere great is not a one-person or one-unit effort, but involves the whole organization as part of the marketing team.

Video I researched and scripted on Nova Scotia's wine industry (3:30 min.)
Speech Writing
At the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (2001-2018), I developed a niche specialty as a draft speechwriter. Below are a few examples of remarks researched and written for federal political representatives and senior agency executives.
R&D Innovation Projects Funding (2017)

Canada's National Minister of Innovation announces funding for four
initiatives in the life sciences sector.
Confederation Bridge Engineering Summit (2007)

Canada's Minister of National Defence marks the anniversary of an engineering achievement.
Valentine's Day Address
(2012)

Sometimes you get to write a speech announcing millions of dollars in funding to improve health care outcomes for children, or to celebrate an engineering marvel that changed the life of an Island people.

Other times your boss is scheduled to deliver remarks at his alma mater on Valentines’ Day.

There are no small speaking opportunities…only small imaginations.
Digital Marketing
Student Recruitment Marketing (2022)

These two marketing pieces were for different purposes of student recruitment at Illinois Central College. The first promoted the idea that you can get a world-class culinary education outside a large urban center. The second, on the cusp of the holiday season, encouraged potential students to take a step to ensure they would have something to look forward to after the holiday season.
Corporate Messaging
Illinois Central College
Year-end Slide Video (2022)

I assembled the year-end slide video for Illinois Central College, which was about putting together a storyline--and working with a talented video producer--to weave music, timely sound effects and a smidgen of live video into an upbeat slide show. (4:45 min.)
FIN Atlantic Film Festival
Corporate Program Messages (2018)

I wrote two corporate messages on behalf of our department's federal minister for the FIN Atlantic film festival. The first one in the attached document appeared in the festival's general program, and the second is an individualized message for the festival's film business networking stream.
News Release Announcing Funding for Restoration of
National Historic Site (2007)
.jpg)
Official organizational communications can be a little dry, but when it is appropriate to add a little color, I try to do so. As with Mary Poppins' spoonful of sugar, it helps the informational medicine go down.
Advertising
"Molly Appeal" Fundraising
Ad for Medical Research (1990s)

This ad appeared in the weekend funny pages. It told the humble story of "Molly," who explained to her family doctor that she wanted to contribute to medical research, but worried that what she could afford wouldn't be enough.
Radio Ad Recalls "The Cottage"
of One's Childhood (1980s)

This radio ad helped build the mystique of a brand that would later become known as Nova Scotia's "Cottage Country."
Print/online
This section contains sample articles and columns that I wrote for a Catholic newspaper, and might be considered relevant solely for faith-based organizations.

However, I use the same skills in putting these pieces together that I have used for secular organizations, business and government.

It's all about finding interesting people, ideas and relatable human themes, as per the samples below, and then connecting these storylines to the priorities of the client, who in this case just happens to be the Lord.
Healing Words (2023)

The courage of some people just takes your breath away. Mark Buettner was a physiotherapist with pancreatic cancer. He passed away after this article was written, but not before witnessing to countless others that unavoidable suffering can have redemptive meaning.
A box of books, and unspoken messages (2021)

This may be strange for a writer to admit, but while words convey meaning, unspoken messages can resonate just as deeply.
Away From Home When Tragedy Strikes (2020)

There was a tragedy in my homeland in the spring of 2020. It was hard not to be there.
